Nutella spread was created in Italy in the 1940s by Mr. Pietro Ferrero, a pastry maker and founder of the Ferrero company. At the time, cocoa was in short supply due to World War II rationing so there was very little chocolate. Mr. Ferrero used hazelnuts, which were plentiful in the Piedmont region of Italy where he lived, to extend the chocolate supply. Nutella was born. In 1983, it made its first US appearance.
World Nutella Day, www.nutelladay.com was created in 2007 by Sara Rosso, an American writer living in Italy. On this day, lovers of Nutella the world over get creative and celebrate with the chocolaty-hazelnut spread.
